Syllabus

In keeping with the changing requirements of time, the UPSC has brought significant changes in the syllabus of Civil Services examination with greater focus on understanding of environmental dynamism and decision making ability. On the one hand, optional subject has been reduced to one but on the other the spectrum of General Studies has been widened to include new subject matters like administrative ethics, integrity, contribution of reformist thinkers, relevant portion of sociology etc.
Scheme and Syllabus for the Preliminary and Main Examinations:

  1. Preliminary Examination
    The Examination shall comprise two compulsory papers of 200 marks each.NOTE

    1. Both the question papers will be of the objective type (multiple choice questions).
    2. The question papers will be set both in Hindi and English. However, questions relating to English Language Comprehension skills of Class X level will be tested through passages from English Language only without providing Hindi translation thereof in the question paper.
    3. Details of the syllabus are indicated in Part A of Section III.
    4. Each paper will be of two hours duration. Blind candidates will however; be allowed an extra time of twenty minutes at each paper.
  2. Main Examination
    The written examination will consist of the following papers:

    (Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management)

    (Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude)
